As the first chapter says, “Everyone loves a dragon story.” There are dragon stories from all around the world! In fact, we have an entire list of Dragon Stories. But we missed a few. Tim Chester introduces readers to eight different dragon tales in this slim volume. Pulling from sources such as Welsh mythology (from the Maginogion), Viking mythology, Greek mythology, Japanese legends, and more, Chester tells of a red dragon, an eight-headed dragon, and more. Did you know that there is a dragon story from Illinois?! I didn’t until I read this entertaining collection of well told tales.

But my favorite part of this book is summed up in chapter 1:

Why are there so many dragons in so many stories? Could it be that every dragon story is an echo of an older, bigger, truer story—the story of a first Dragon and the greatest every Dragonslayer?

Chester, p. 8

Chester expands on this in the final two chapters of the book which are worth the price of the book if this is a new concept to you. Every year, we include a “book with a dragon” as one of our reading challenge categories, and we love to remind people that the book of Revelation fits into that category: there is an ultimate Dragon story and an ultimate Dragonslayer. Read this short book and enjoy the dragon stories, but do not skip the ending chapters!
