Who Are You? explores the roots of identity in a way accessible to preschoolers.
*Who Are You? A Little Book about Your Big Identity by Christina Fox, illustrated by Daron Parton. Crossway, 2024, 32 pages.
Reading Level: Picture Book, ages 4-8
Recommended for: ages 5-10
Who am I? is a question few preschoolers ask, but it’s never too soon to start thinking about it. Christina Fox begins with a series of questions about individual preferences, physical characteristics, abilities, quirks, and opinions (including the opinions of others). “. . . But is that what makes you, you?” No; the root of identity goes back to the beginning, where God created humankind in His own image.
In the past, young people were expected to follow their culture’s expectations, but today they are burdened with the task of deciding for themselves who they are. None of us is capable of doing that. But a child growing up with the knowledge that God made him and knows him intimately has a security that most of his peers can’t fathom. Who Are You? help young minds to start thinking about this central concept: “If you’re God’s child, you’re made to live for him.” The Note to Parents suggests questions and discussion tips appropriate to the age level.
Bottom Line: A winsome rhyming text and bright illustrations communicate an important biblical truth.
