Tell God How You Feel is first and foremost a book for adults to use with children: teachers, parents, Sunday school teachers, grandparents. Yet, in an age in which emotions seem to drive much of our national “public square” rhetoric and conversation, perhaps adults themselves should read and ponder this book even before sharing with children! Fox tackles five key emotions: fear, loneliness, rejection, missing a loved one, and gratitude. Each primary emotion is creatively portrayed through a short, fictitious story. Discussion questions follow each short story. There is no need to use each question; rather, the questions provide good jumping off points for further follow-up conversations. The stories may be used in any order, enabling perceptive parents and caregivers to “strike while the iron is hot,” so to speak.

Fox undergirds her work with sound theology and a careful study of the Psalms of lament. After all, the Lord designed humans and their emotions. We have a biblical pattern for recognizing and grappling with these emotions, and it is wise to pay attention to that example before turning to contemporary psychology (contemporary psychology can offer aid, as well, but it shouldn’t be our first resource). Illustrations portray a nice variety of children, both in terms of race and in terms of physical ability.
