Recommended For: Families with kids of all ages, especially younger children

Certain passages in Isaiah have those us who know Handel’s Messiah singing them instead of reading them; Isaiah is rich with prophecies about the coming Messiah. Thornton examines five “wonders” about Jesus from Isaiah: Jesus as the Light of the World, the Fruitful Branch, the Good Shepherd, Immanuel God With Us, and the Bread of Life. Each week begins with a passage from Isaiah that introduces this wonder, or concept. Consecutive days expand on that idea with passages from Isaiah and other parts of Scripture along with discussion questions and a short commentary. Weeks are clearly organized with a beginning overview (“Picture It”), a closer look, a reflection on the promise inherent in that “wonder,” and a culminating family fun day. Each week also includes the text of a Christmas carol, an ornament to color, and other suggested activities.

It’s wonderful to have Isaiah’s rich prophecies about Jesus as the Messiah broken down into family-friendly format! This book is bright and colorful, each day’s devotional is short and to the point, and big concepts are explained in child-friendly terms. Scripture passages are from the ESV or NLT translations, although families can certainly look up the same passages in a different translation if they wish. Personally, I love the extras included each week, from a note about St. Nicholas to an explanation of “Xmas” v. “Christmas.” Highly recommended, especially for families with elementary school-aged children (and younger). If you’re looking for an Advent guide that is rich theologically and a one-stop shop that includes a few extras (thus eliminating possible Googling for cookie recipes and the like), this might be just what you’re looking for!
