Papá’s Magical Water-Jug Clock

Jesús is excited to work with his Papá on a busy Saturday full of yards to mow, and as soon as the water jug is empty, they can come home…right?

Papá’s Magical Water-Jug Clock by Jesús Trejo, illustrated by Eliza Kinkz, Minerva, 2023. 48 pages.

  • Reading Level: Picture books, ages 4-8
  • Recommended For: Ages 4-8

It’s Saturday, and because young Jesús is so excited to help his Papá with their lawn-care business, he wakes his parents early. He joyfully fills the big orange jug with water and shares it generously with each homeowner’s animals all morning, takes lots of drinks, and dowses himself to keep cool.

As soon as the jug is empty, their workday is done…right? Can they go home now?

This is a truly childlike story with a loving family modeling healthy attitudes towards work and also gently correcting mistakes. The loose illustration style reminds me of This is My Home, This is My School.

Definitely a story worth sharing.

  • Book Review: I mentioned This is My Home, This is My School by Jonathan Bean. It’s about homeschooling, but what kind of home work do you think the main character has to do after school?
  • Resource: Work is an important part of fulfilling our calling of stewardship. Here’s a list of books about work for Labor Day–or any day
