Sometimes simple and straightforward is best, particularly during a busy Christmas season. It’s hard to remember “the reason for the season” amidst the hubbub of school projects, musical performances, work parties, and the like. The Weary World Rejoices might be just what your family needs during this busy season. Its simplicity is only one of its virtues.

Each day’s reading follows the same format: a short “read” section followed by a reflection, a respond prompt, and a “rejoice” part (a Christmas carol). There are no crafts, lengthy activities, or other movable parts required. The 25 days are grouped thematically around the Advent wreath candles: Hope, Peace, Joy, Love, Faith. (Not all Advent wreath traditions use the same format.) Each candle’s theme includes 5 readings written by different members of The Gospel Coalition.

Anytime a book brings together multiple authors, style and quality vary. And that is true for this book. But overall, the content is solid and well-written, and the entries point readers to Christ. For busy families with teens at home who wish to do something simple for Advent, this slim volume offers a nice option.
