Who was Tolkien? Where was he born? What did he enjoy as a boy? This book answers all those questions and many more. Starting from Tolkien’s birth in South Africa and moving to school in England, service in WWI, the formation of the Inklings, and onward, J. R. R. Tolkiens for Kids tells the story of Tolkien’s life and work accompanied by numerous black and white photographs and illustrations.

There are many books out there about Tolkien, so you might wonder if there is room for another. (And all the Tolkien lovers will chorus yes, I know!) But this book is perfect for students who are past the picture book biography stage, but not ready for some of the meatier books about Tolkien. The activities are engaging and often imaginative. (In other words, not many supplies are needed.) The amount of information covered will impress even seasoned Tolkien veterans; Carr has done her research and it shows. Well written, informative, and engaging, J. R. R. Tolkien for Kids will be good for both eager Tolkien students and teachers who want to introduce Tolkien and his world to their students.

Considerations:

  • This book could have used one more pass with a copy editor —there are a few errors, including the misspelling of Edith’s last name. On the other hand, this could be a fun activity for students to play editor!
