What Are Your Kids Getting Under the Tree?

Janie has offered lots of kids’ book gift suggestions on the site this week.  And I’m hoping to chime in next week, too.  For those of you who aren’t done buying gifts, you’ll want to check back next week (maybe Tuesday?) for our Holiday Book Fair….over thirty gift recommendations in one spot!   In the meantime, we know that many of you are out there combing bookstores yourselves, looking for that special gift for a child or YA in your life.  Found anything you like?  Any book in particular you’d like our advice on?  We’d love to hear from you.

I’m actually doing a post on this next Friday. 🙂

My kids get a lot of books for Christmas but here is a sample.

For 7yo daughter: The Chesire Cheese Cat: A Dickens of a Tale by Carmen Deedy and Randall Wright

For 3yo son: Apple Pie ABC by Alison Murray

I’ll look forward to reading your suggestions, Brandy! Thanks for letting me know. I’m not familiar with those books, so I hope you’ll tell me more. Love Carmen Deedy. I had the great privilege of working on her books at Peachtree. She’s such a dynamic, humble person. She used to come out and work with the folks in the warehouse (i.e. me, when I started) when she’d visit. She treated every person in her path like a sister.

I’m really excited to give my daughter the Complete Brambly Hedge Collection by Jill Barklem. These books are out of print, so I’m thrilled to get all 8 in one volume!

My son will be receiving Dangerous Journey, an adaptation of Pilgrim’s Progress.

These were the major purchases, so far, but I also have a stash of books that I have picked up throughout the year at Goodwill and other book sales which I will sort through to find age-appropriate titles.

Heather, I do so like Brambly Hedge. Haven’t been able to get a copy for myself, er, my kids yet, but it’s on the list. Also, Dangerous Journey is my favorite kids’ book right now. We blogged through it in October, and put together some resources for really bringing the spiritual messages alive for kids. You can get it free here, or we’ll be putting together a downloadable version in the next couple of weeks. (I promise it’s coming in January, if not before!) https://redeemedreader.com/2011/10/dangerous-journey-part-1/.

Emily, I always like hearing that authors whose work I enjoy are all around nice people. I didn’t know you worked for Peachtree. The Cheshire Cheese Cat is about a cat who eats cheese and forms a partnership with a group of mice in an Inn. They bring him cheese and he keeps them from getting eaten. And the Inn is regular eating place of Charles Dickens (who is a character). Plus the Tower ravens and Queen Victoria make appearances. It is really a delightful book and so well written.
    Here is my review:

Brandy: I have the Cheshire Cheese Cat on my shelf to read this week. I was thinking about posting a review in February, because that’s the Dickens bicentennial. But it might be worth promoting a little sooner!
