The Chicken Squad includes 4 intrepid sleuths who are on a quest in this funny early chapter book.

The Chicken Squad: The First Misadventure by Doreen Cronin and illustrated by Kevin Cornell. Atheneum Books for Young Readers, 2014. 112 pages.

  • Reading Level: Chapter Books (ages 4-10)
  • Recommended for: Ages 4-10

Meet the Chicken Squad: Dirt, Sugar, Sweetie, and Poppy, a brave (but very silly) group of amateur sleuths on the case of the Big and Scary object that Tail (the squirrel) has spotted in their yard. J. J. Tully, retired search-and-rescue dog, is napping quietly in the corner, hoping the chicks can keep themselves out of trouble for the afternoon….

Super sleuthing chicks are a force with which to reckon, however, and the Chicken Squad is on the case: note-taking, deducting, and bravely going where no chick has gone before. Alternating points of view, humorous illustrations, and a just right mystery keep young readers engaged (and chuckling) to the very end. Will your young reader solve the case before the Chicken Squad does?

Considerations: none

Bottom Line: Silly, yes, but a very fun early chapter book to look for at your local library.
