Pilgrim’s Progress (and Little Pilgrim’s Progress) is near and dear to many of our hearts, but how much do you know about the author?

John Bunyan lived in the seventeenth century during a time of political upheaval in England, was a troublemaker in his youth, suffered the loss of his mother, sister, and first wife, had a blind daughter, and struggled to find peace until his conversion in 1652. Bunyan was a tinker, but the Lord called him to preach the gospel apart from the official Church of England, which landed him in prison more than once. He continued preaching during confinement and was inspired to write Pilgrim’s Progress, a bestseller that has ministered to saints for over three hundred years.

This biography is a helpful resource for understanding the circumstances in which Pilgrim’s Progress was written and the struggles of a man who was once a careless sinner but became a bold and faithful preacher by grace. His story encourages us in a different way than his bestselling book, because it shows the real experience of a man of God.

Bottom Line: A good home or church library resource to follow the reading of Pilgrim’s Progress.
