This is an unusual teatime story because it is set by the sea in less than ideal weather. That doesn’t seem to be a reason to stay home when there are still so many things to see and do. The climax of Granny and Bean’s walk is sharing tea (it appears to be more of a hearty snack), then they work their way home. 

The poetic narrative by Newbery-award winning author Karen Hesse is lovely, and the loose, classic style of illustrations by Charlotte Voake make the reader FEEL the wind and chill, while bright spots of color prevent the story from becoming dreary and harsh. Together they make the experience quite appealing, demonstrating that poor weather is no excuse for staying indoors.

Bottom Line: A charming take on the variety of walks to take and memories to make between a grandparent and child.
