  • Recommended For: Ages 12 and up

You may be familiar with Trillia Newbell’s 52 Weeks in the Word for adults; it’s a guided reading of the entire Bible in a year. The Student Edition is similar, but it covers only the New Testament. It also includes more helps and extras.

Each week covers a specified portion of Scripture, beginning in Matthew and moving right through to Revelation. 5 days a week have readings, 1 chapter each day with journaling space under each chapter’s listing (2 chapters’ worth/page). Each week, the same reflection questions are offered to promote thoughtful reading. These questions are the same as in the adult version:

  • What do you learn about God and His character in these verses?
  • Where is Jesus in these chapters? Where do you see the gospel?
  • How might you apply these verses to your life?

Each week concludes with an “extra” feature. These range from historical information to theological studies to topical studies. They are interactive with space to jot down notes or look up relevant Bible passages. The book is just colorful enough to be interesting but with plenty of white space to encourage journaling and note-taking.

I know this is the “student” version, but I’m considering going through it myself! Like the grownup version, the book is entirely undated, so students can begin any time of the year. Summer is a fantastic time to start because schedules tend to be a bit more relaxed than during the school year. The guide does not include the Bible, so you may use whichever version your family already uses. The book is one giant journal, so it will be “used up” by the end of the year. This actually means that your student will have a tremendous record of the things he or she learned about God and the New Testament!

Bottom Line: 52 Weeks in the Word: Student Edition is a fantastic tool for encouraging thoughtful Bible reading in young teens.
