the treasure

Two children living on a Greek island discover a sealed clay pot containing two scrolls and a book. The scrolls are copies of the gospel of Luke and the book of Acts. The book is a sea captain’s log of what he discovered by reading the scrolls, and clues to a treasure the children will find if they read the scrolls and the book and solve the riddles.

The story of the two children, their mother, and the local pastor (who knows more than the children expect) is woven around the captain’s book, which moves through Luke and Acts with Scripture readings, devotionals, and extra notes. A treasure hunt, a ship, special coins, and a repentant prodigal form the frame tale for The Treasure.

Machowski’s strength is drawing object lessons from the teaching and events in Scripture that reveal the excellence of Christ and His church. The Greek island setting is unique, and while some of the text in the frame story could be tighter, the narrative is enjoyable and offers a fresh context for the latest volume in the Ancient Story Ever New series.

Although it can be hard to find illustrations I genuinely enjoy in Christian picture books, I appreciate Sorrentino’s art. Her style and palette have both a retro and modern feel, which suits the story perfectly. Nicely done, New Growth Press.

Fans of this series will be glad to add this volume to their home library.
