John and Christine face the most nefarious villain yet in Right Cross, the conclusion to the Shepherd Suspense Trilogy.
Right Cross (Shepherd Suspense #3) by Andrew Huff. Kregel Publications, 2021. 272 pages.
Reading Level: Adults
Recommended For: Teens, ages 15 and up
John Cross has gone rogue. Or has he? Christine isn’t sure what to think when she visits him in a high security prison. He certainly isn’t speaking like the ex-CIA-turned-pastor she thought she knew. John had resigned his pastorate over doubts about his vocation; were those doubts extending to his faith, too? The tables turn when Christine herself is captured. Can John save her in time?
Following right on the heels of books 1 and 2 in the Shepherd Suspense trilogy, Right Cross is nonstop action from page 1 to the end. In fact, it’s almost too much action in this volume as Huff begins to develop secondary characters alongside John and Christine. His next book project appears to follow these secondary characters, so the set-up is understandable. Still, Right Cross felt a bit more cluttered and frenetic than the first two books. The Shepherd Suspense series wraps up well, though, and readers will enjoy the ending. Teens who enjoy action-packed adventures will find these fun reads. The characters’ faith (or journeys to faith) read authentically, and it’s refreshing to hear of bad guys who “curse” or let a stream of “profanity” out without having to read the actual words themselves. After all, we expect bad guys to be, well, bad, don’t we?
Considerations:
- As with the first two books, there is plenty of violence in this third installment. Still, John maintains his determination not to have to kill (something we don’t often see in action movies these days, even from the heroes).
