A Visit to the Printers

Last Monday, I set off for a visit to our local printers. While I’ve written about going to the printer’s before, this time I wasn’t just picking up a proof.

In the midst of the book maker

A Basement Tour

Instead, it was time for a behind-the-scenes tour of SUN Printing with our printing contact, Carl. Past the lobby, down a corridor, then downstairs and through another hallway, I was ushered into the basement.

Another view of the book maker
Tim with the box of Quarterly magazines he printed.

There, our Quarterly magazines were waiting on the book maker, a collating machine. Tim, another SUN Printing employee, showed me how he’ll first run a couple sample copies to make sure the staples are lined up.

While there is computer automation, Tim has done this long enough that he can do it by eye with the manual controls.

Once the demo copies are looking good, it is time for the machine to get to work. The engine hums and pages rustle as the machine busily collates, staples, and folds the magazines into the final product that ends up in member mailboxes.

Carl, our friendly local printing contact
Walking through SUN printing, there is a sharp smell coming from all this ink!

As a beautiful stack of Quarterlies were pumped out on the other side and then boxed, I had to grin seeing so many names I recognize. We love getting to know our members.

Watch it for yourself!

The Quarterly Scoop

Wondering about the Quarterly? As Janie would say, we’re not talking about catalogues of ads with content you have to track down from page to page.

Nor are we talking about weekly mags that stack up in forbidding piles because you don’t have time to read them. Our recent issue of Redeemed Reader Quarterly is 23 packed pages centered around the ever-popular theme of “STEM.”

Here’s a sample of the contents:

  • Lists of outstanding STEM books and stories
  • A fun books and technology word search
  • A thoughtful original article “Math is Beautiful” by Professor Sarah Donaldson
  • An interview with Amanda Cleary Eastep, author of the Tree Street Kids series.
  • Practical tips on how to incorporate and work with STEM as Christians
  • Dewey Decimal fun for kids, and
  • A Wordsmith Writing Corner
Ready to be mailed

And believe it or not, there’s more!

The Redeemed Reader Quarterly, at this point, is available only to RR Members. How can you be a member? Simply go to our membership page, choose your member tier, and sign up! We’d love to have you on our team!

I totally, totally recommend becoming a member!!! My family has been a RR Member for almost a year (we’ve gotten three Quarterlys so far!) and each one has been read over and over again so they are very well loved. My favorite one has been the Mission’s issue. There are a lot of reasons I enjoyed it so much but one of them is that I love missionary stories and there were many great reading ideas, (as in every Quarterly!) that I could choose from.
If you’re considering getting the Quarterly I’d say do it right now. Each one is beautifully, meaningfully, bookishly, done. Basically every good ly word you can think of would describe RRs amazing Quarterly! They’ve increased our knowledge of the world and brought us closer to the Lord and we couldn’t love them more!
