The World Series was first played in 1903. Baseball—and sports in general—has certainly changed; the way we watch the game has changed even more. STEM in the World Series looks at the four STEM categories (science, technology, engineering, and math) in turn, examining how each has contributed to the grand game of baseball. Physics (science) has helped players know whether to slide headfirst or feet first into home plate. Technology has helped us watch the game in our own homes. Engineering informs those who build stadiums and even contributed to the invention of artificial turf. And math… well, any baseball fan knows that numbers are involved.

STEM in the World Series is part of a new series: STEM in the Greatest Sports Events. A companion series looks at STEM in Sports. Straightforward, informational style text, occasional sidebars, and lots of facts will appeal to newly independent readers who would rather be playing sports than reading. They might learn something new about their favorite sport while practicing reading skills; they might also learn something new about science! STEM in the World Series (and its companions) isn’t the most literary book, but sometimes an informational text is just what a child needs. Look for these at your local library (these are also the kinds of books libraries readily purchase when customers request them).
