Click, Clack, Peep! by Doreen Cronin, illustrated by Betsy Lewin. Atheneum Books for Young Readers, 2015. 40 pages.

Reading Level: Picture Books (ages 0-4)

Recommended for: Ages 0-4

Toddlers and preschoolers enjoy rhythm and sound effects, and this book delivers on both counts. Readers familiar with the creators’ former books (such as Click, Clack, Moo) will enjoy seeing their old barnyard friends back for some baby animal fun. A new duckling has been born (hatched), and everyone is delighted. But just like new human babies, the barnyard friends soon realize that new babies are LOUD (peep, peep, peep). And they don’t sleep when they’re supposed to. Resourceful Duck hatches the perfect solution, but Farmer Brown isn’t as enthused.

As with their other books, Cronin and Lewin do a terrific job of meshing text and illustrations. Lewin’s illustrations begin the story on the title page—don’t skip it! The final spread will bring chuckles from toddlers and preschoolers and their parents, and children will delight in the text’s repetition throughout the book. This book is especially fun for families with new babies (and older siblings will find it most amusing). Babies are a gift from the Lord, but sometimes they do try our patience.
