The Queen’s Shadow: A Story About How Animals See by Cybele Young. Kids Can Press, 2015. 40 pages.

Reading Level: Picture Books, ages 8-10

Recommended for: Ages 8-10

The queen is throwing a party with all of her favorite animal friends when the lights go out and her shadow goes missing! Who has stolen the queen’s shadow? An investigation begins in which each animal is in turn accused and then vindicated, each time highlighting the unique way in which a given animal actually sees and processes visual information.

The story’s text is full of sophisticated humor, alliteration, and witty comments. There is a small paragraph on each page that gives the scientific explanation of a particular animal’s eyesight; back matter includes further information on each animal featured in the book. Illustrations are unique, showcasing each animal’s eyes and using colors mixed with black and white to complement the story. The ending is a bit silly but in keeping with the general mirthful tone of the story as a whole.
