*The One O’Clock Miracle: A True Story About Trusting the Words of Jesus by Alison Mitchell, illustrated by Catalina Echeverri. The Good Book Company, 2015. 32 pages.

Reading Level: Picture books, ages 0-8

Recommended For: Reading aloud, ages 0-8

An anxious father walks twenty long miles because he has heard about Jesus and hopes that He will heal his son. When he reaches Jesus at 1:00, Jesus heals the boy from a distance. “Go. Your son will live.” The father obediently returns home, BELIEVING and TRUSTING the promise, and his faith is rewarded.

I love Mitchell’s fresh retelling of familiar Bible stories and Echeverri’s childlike and humorous illustrations. The great burden that the father carries with him over the long journey seems as heavy as his anxiety, but when his servants meet him with news that his son is well, he casts the remaining, smaller burden aside. At what time did the miracle occur? It was one o’clock, the same time he spoke with Jesus. (He checks his sundial watch to be sure.) The story points to the power and glory of Jesus, the son of God.

This is a nicely done picture book that is worth enjoying repeatedly.
