Miss Prim Goes Wild by Katy Rose

Miss Prim Goes Wild is a delightful picture book that celebrates the awakening both of spring and of a person’s heart.

Miss Prim is, well, prim. Everything about her, her life, her house, her yard is neat, tidy, and organized. “Miss Prim had been called all kinds of things—precise, punctual, and practical.” And that she is. And everyone knows it: neighbors, children, animals (birds can be trespassers in Miss Prim’s mind!).

But one day, Miss Prim is caught off guard by spring. Spring in all its glorious exuberance. She won’t stand for it! Not in her yard! She gets right to work as soon as it is dark enough to avoid her neighbors’ prying eyes. Well, wouldn’t you know it? Miss Prim fell asleep, right there in the grass under the stars. And something began to thaw. Perhaps we could say, something began to sprout… right there in Miss Prim’s prim little heart.

Books that celebrate the thawing of a lifetime’s anger or bitterness or hardheartedness are nothing new. One of my personal favorites is “The Selfish Giant” by Oscar Wilde. But Miss Prim Goes Wild is a lovely new addition to this field. Illustrations are charming, especially Miss Prim’s face. The text sets apart some words in bold to add to the emphasis; this will make for a fantastic read aloud to a group of children.

Back matter includes Miss Prim’s directions for “going wild” (planting pollinator gardens, letting wildflowers grow, etc.).

Bottom Line: Miss Prim Goes Wild is a delightful picture book that celebrates the awakening both of spring and of a person’s heart. It will make a great read aloud.
