Angels on Your Side is a fun book, but it’s also a book with a great reminder of God’s care for his people.
Angels on Your Side: When You’re Feeling Scared by Marty Machowski, illustrated by Rommel Ruiz. New Growth Press, 2023, 32 pages.

- Reading Level: Picture Book, ages 8-10
- Recommended for: ages 6-10
First things first: this book comes with two pairs of 3D glasses. While you wait for your order to arrive, let me tell you about the rest of it.
Using the frame tale of a grandfather calming his grandson during a thunderstorm, Angels on Your Side includes some of the most famous stories of angels from the Bible. Not the stories of angels showing up alone, like Gabriel to Mary. No, these are the stories of the heavenly host: when Elijah prays for his servant’s eyes to be opened. Or the shepherds fall down in fear as the host sings. And the angels pictured are fierce warriors. Not cherubs in white robes, plucking little harps. The angels in this book lend credence to biblical claims of their defense of God’s people!
Each angel story includes Scripture references for you to verify (maybe read alongside this story). Some of Machowski’s statements are startling, such as “God assigns angels to guard over each of his children.” He references Matthew 18:10, which says, “For I tell you that in heaven their (children’s) angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.”
As Machowski does so well, he brings the gospel in loud and clear, pointing out that angels did not defend Jesus when he was on the cross. But that was all part of God’s plan.
This book’s art is like a video game: the 3D elements are fun, the colors are vibrant, and every page is dynamic and full of action. I predict boys, especially, will enjoy this one for its depictions of warrior angels. While you’re at it, consider listening to this song by Chris Tomlin, which also talks about angel armies!
Bottom Line: Angels on Your Side is a fun book, but it’s also a book with a great reminder of God’s care for his people.
