Getting to the moon was only the beginning. But How to Survive on the Moon?
How to Survive on the Moon: Lunar Lessons from a Rocket Scientist by Joalda Morancy, illustrated by Aaron Cushley. Neon Squid (St. Martin’s Press, 2025, 47 pages.

Reading Level: Picture books, ages 4-8
Recommended for: ages 7-10
So we got to the moon. The logical next step assumed by this picture book is a permanent moon colony. What if you signed up to join the space pioneers? Kids welcome—a true colony needs all ages. But first, intense training for an alien atmosphere. Once arrived, “Surviving in an environment that is actively trying to kill you can be a challenge.” Reduced gravity, moon dust, and razor-sharp rocks are everyday hazards on the surface, but below, life goes on in the lava tubes. These are channels from the moon’s molten core, a “built-in road system” underground where gardens, mines, and schoolrooms, and living quarters have been carved out.
None of these elaborate plans have gone into production, but they’re in the calculations and on the drawing boards of astrophysicists everywhere. It all seems possible, and might even be worth the effort and expense. How to Survive on the Moon gives a comprehensive picture of how it might happen, with cheerful blue-toned illustrations and lively text. Aspiring astronauts will want to sign up, and they just might get their chance!
Bottom Line: A informative and entertaining look at our next big space challenge.
