*Battle Bunny by Jon Scieszka and Mac Barnett

A birthday book from Alex’s grandma is transformed into a very different kind of story: Battle Bunny is the hilarious result.

*Battle Bunny by Jon Scieszka and Mac Barnett, illustrated by Matthew Myers. Simon & Schuster, 2013. 32 pages.

Remember the lovely Little Golden Books with the charming characters and sweet illustrations? They have a special place in the history of children’s literature.

In Battle Bunny, Alex’s loving Gran Gran has given him a nice book about a birthday bunny who thinks his friends have all forgotten his special day. But Alex has other ideas. Beginning on the copyright page, he uses emphatic pencil and some vigorous erasing to create a new story about Battle Bunny, a forest creature with an Evil Plan. Alex calls the president to warn him and the president mobilizes the animals, but no one can defeat Battle Bunny. All the animals are put under his control. Who will save the day?!

*indicates a Redeemed Reader starred review, an outstanding example in its field.

Bottom Line: A hilarious book, perfect for boys who love explosions.
