A Pinecone! shows the delight in collecting nature through a child’s eyes, with sympathy for the parent who has to deal with the consequences.

*A Pinecone! by Helen Yoon. Candlewick Press, 2024. 32 pages.

It’s a cold day. Off we go for a walk with daddy, the dog, and a little girl barely visible behind the fence. The dog notices a pine cone. Daddy and the dog move on, the girl closes the gate. She notices–and greets the pine cone! She tries to show daddy, but he is busy being pulled in all directions by the dog, so the girl busies herself gathering a whole extended family of pine cones while the dog makes a mess of himself and daddy, cutting the walk short. Daddy cleans up, the girl fills every container she can find with pine cones…and finally daddy realizes that there has been something of an invasion.

After the surprise wears off, he finds a way to help his daughter put them to good use.
