A Friend for Eddy by Ann Kim Ha

A Friend for Eddy is absolutely perfect for a story time read aloud to a group of young children.

A Friend for Eddy by Ann Kim Ha. Greenwillow, 2024. 40 pages.

One day Eddy sees another goldfish! He has a friend! Every day, Eddy talks to the goldfish. In his mind, they have formed a significant friendship. Wouldn’t it be great if he could somehow play with his new friend instead of tapping on the glass of his bowl?

And so, Eddy leaps out of his bowl. Disaster! He lands, belly up, on the very dry table top. And his friend is really the eye of a black cat. Gasp!

This is a very sweet story of two unlikely friends. Collage illustrations are amazing: just the right mix of vibrant and simple to catch readers’ eyes and to enhance what is really happening. In other words, the reader knows exactly what Eddy doesn’t know, from the beginning of the story. Bold and distinct, even children at the back of a group will readily grasp what is going on. Reach for this next time you are planning a library or classroom story time!

Bottom Line: A Friend for Eddy is absolutely perfect for a story time read aloud to a group of young children.
