The Best News of All shares the Christmas story by examining one short scripture passage which children are encouraged to memorize.
The Best News of All by Sally Michael, illustrated by Sengsavane Chounramany. New Growth Press, 2024, 24 pages.
Reading Level: Picture Book, ages 4-8
Recommended for: ages 3-6
Every Christmas season yields new nativity picture books–what makes this one different? It’s one of a series of Bible Verses to Remember books from Crossway, in which the text is centered around one brief scripture passage. For The Best News of All, the text is
“Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a savior who is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:10b-11)
As the story of the shepherds unfolds, accompanied by exuberant illustrations, each phrase (good news, all the people, City of David, Savior) receives an explanation suitable for young ears. The Parent Note at the end stresses the importance of scripture memorization and includes tips for facilitating the practice with young children. At the target age for this book they learn best by imitation, so it’s never too early to start!
Note: Other titles in this series are Our Great God, Good Gifts Come from God, and Give God Your Worries.
Bottom Line: An appealing introduction both to the Christmas story and the practice of scripture memorization.
