“Like all of the best stories, this takes place in Idaho.” How’s that for an opening line?

With the dramatic flair of a favorite storytelling uncle leaning back on two legs of a chair on the front porch, Eggers takes facts (yes, this story is based on real events, and here’s a picture!) and creates a delightful story out of them.

A silver mine, a single man in possession of a great fortune who is in want of a wife, a wedding, a house project, a birth, a funeral, pigs, another house project, and a happy ending. That pretty much sums up the story.

But you’ve got to read it, because the humor, vocabulary, and whimsical illustrations that aren’t too colorful (though they’re perfect for the story) make this a glorious read aloud or read alone. This is worth adding to your home library.
