Reading Level: Ages 8-10

Recommended For: Ages 0-10

Little Hearts Prepare Him Room recognizes that many well-intentioned attempts to sit down and share devotions with young children don’t often go as planned. Rather than leaving parents discouraged because doing so little doesn’t seem like enough, Mackle has written short devotions through which the events of the first chapters of Matthew and Luke slowly unfold (with a little help from other passages such as Isaiah and Philippians).

Each devotional is designed in such a way that parents have options, depending on the age(s) of their child(ren):

  • Read just the short Scripture passage
  • Read the Scripture passage and the comments in bold
  • Read the entire devotional and include the questions

Some days you’ll accomplish more than others, and that’s okay.

Move on. You’re laying foundations, and there’s always next year to help reinforce and remember the Truth.

(Personal note: Keep in mind that you don’t have to read one of the devotionals every single day. I know how it goes! If you miss a day, either double up and let two kids put an ornament on the tree in one day, or keep going beyond December 25.)

Ornament options

If you already own a set of Jesse Tree ornaments, Mackle suggests how to use them with her book. Another option is to buy a set of ornaments with a key verse and simple illustration from Crew and Co. (both book and ornaments are available here)

The best feature of this book

What I like best about this Little Hearts Prepare Him Room is how each day she introduces and explains a wide range of important doctrines, including general and special revelation, sanctification, grace, and even lesser known terms like confluence (God uses the evil man intends to fulfill His purposes). Yes, this book is intended for young children, but doesn’t assume that they are TOO young for great Truths. Systematic Theology made simple, right?

Very nicely done. You can purchase a your copy or set here.
