The “Critter Jitters” series tackles the anxieties of young children in a humorous, reassuring way.
Summer Camp Critter Jitters and First Day Critter Jitters by Jory John, illustrated by Liz Climo. Dial, 40 pages
Reading Level: Picture book, ages 4-8
Recommended for: ages 4-8
Everyone has fears, but how do we deal with them? In Summer Camp Critter Jitters (2021), these cute critters are all nervous about spending a week in the great outdoors, but for different reasons. What if Skunk reverts to smelly form when they tell scary stories around the campfire? What if they find out that Bear is afraid of the woods, or Duck can’t swim, or Snake is . . . a snake? Worst-case scenarios play out in their imaginations, all through the packing and the bus ride and at their first view of the camp. (Big lake! Huge woods!) But the opportunity to help out their counselor solve a problem brings them together to face their fears and contribute their abilities. And guess what? Camp is kinda fun!
First Day Critter Jitters (2020) follows a similar pattern. Just before the first day day of school, the critters spend a sleepless night rehearsing their anxieties. How will snake wear a backpack? How will Rabbit work off all his energy? How will Parrot be able to shut up? And the little kangaroo is missing his mom already. Turns out their teacher has his own reasons to be nervous about teaching a class–it’s his first day, too! Again this calls for teamwork, and the critters all chip in to help Day One go smoothly.
Not all fearful situations resolve this easily of course, but the message to stop focusing on yourself and look out for others is well taken. Simple but clever illustrations, relatable fears, and reassuring solutions might actually help some young children consider their own fears and think more positively.
