NIV Big Dreams, Big Prayers Bible. Zonderkidz, 2016, 1344 pages. (Soft- and hardcover editions available)
Reading Level: Middle grades, ages 10-12
Recommended for: Middle grades, ages 8-12
Bottom Line: The prayer-focused goal of this Bible is laudable, but the execution leaves something to be desired.
As advertised, the focus of this Bible is all about prayer, from the highlighted verses that emphasize it to the “Conversations with God” devotionals that explain it. One-page book introductions are standard: Who wrote the book, why, when and where; what do we learn about God; key people; major points or stories. Likewise the back matter, with its list of weights and measures and a topical index to the devotionals. There are also five reading plans: three two-week surveys, one 180-day “guided tour” and an “every word” plan that takes three years. The appendix also includes a prayer journal with space for recording requests and answers. Color inserts feature the a version of the Ten Commandments for kids and the Lord’s Prayer, but do not include pictures of Jesus.
The devotionals address some big themes, like Judgment and the indwelling Holy Spirit, as well as personal concerns like sadness, promises, and disappointment. As content goes, they seem generally okay but are written in a casual, even slangy tone—perhaps too much. For example, “Keep talking to your heavenly dad, even if you’re tired or heartbroken. Show how serious you are. God wants to bless you.” And, “Jesus is more than a rescue service; he’s a best friend. Hang out with him today.” Some of these devotionals seem a little glib and won’t necessarily resonate with all readers at this age. And as vital as prayer is, an overemphasis on anything, even communication with God, can divert attention from Christ and encourage an insular, “me and Jesus” mindset.
