Babies love to be read to, love to be sung to, enjoy looking at pictures (and maybe roughhandle the pages), which is exactly what makes the Hymns for Little Ones ideal.
Four favorite hymns visually come to life in these board books that are delightful to look at and handy for singing. In Amazing Grace, three children wander out to the woods one evening and experience hints of wonder, being lost and found, being “blinded” by camouflage and enabled to see, being fearful and relieved, and the welcome of homecoming.

In Nothing But the Blood of Jesus, a lamb joins a duckling playing in a mud puddle then finds cleansing in the flowing stream. Symbols of butterflies and the brightness of the setting sun suggest the beauty and purity of the Savior who makes us white as snow.

In It Is Well With My Soul two children go canoeing down a river that is at first peaceful, then turbulent, then peaceful again. At one point the children are seen from above with the clouds reflecting in the water (“The clouds be rolled back as a scroll”) and at last they arrive at a glorious water fall crested with the light of the sun.

Holy, Holy, Holy begins with an early morning nature walk to a beach, past a songbird on her nest (“Our song shall rise to Thee”) finding trillium flowers (“blessed Trinity!”), and admiring the sunrise over the water. There are many instances of three in the illustrations, emphasizing the Trinity.
The text is limited to two verses of each hymn, whichever ones were most suited to illustration, but the tune and ALL the verses are provided on the final page spread. The illustrations are lovely and childlike, inviting both singing and just enjoying talking about the Truths being taught in the hymns.

Bottom Line: Hymns for Little Ones are a welcome addition to the board book basket, whether at church or at home. These are a marvelous asset; go ahead and buy all four and use them often!
