God’s Little Oceanographer invites children to wonder at both God’s magnificent creation and at the Creator Himself.

God’s Little Oceanographer (Big Adventures for Growing Minds) by Tina Cho, illustrated by Marta Álvarez Miguéns. WaterBrook, 2025. 40 pages.
- Reading Level: Picture books, ages 4-8
- Recommended For: Ages 0-6
Beginning on the endpapers (right inside the front cover!), readers and listeners are taken on a journey deep under the sea. We learn about all manner of creatures that live above, in, and under the sea, from dolphins to amphipods. Certain species of birds live around the sea. And humans can enjoy the sea in so many ways, both on the shore and in the water.
Primary text is easy to read with highlighted words for emphasis: “Seaweed sways. Otters munch. Dolphins jump.” In addition to pointing out the many creatures God made, the text also encourages children to praise the Lord for His Creation. Secondary text in smaller type includes plenty of nonfiction facts (did you know that each dolphin has a unique whistle? Or that seaweed can be red, green, or brown?). Additionally, each page includes a Bible verse in italics.
Illustrations are bright and colorful, featuring a multiethnic cast of human characters in addition to a plethora of plants and animals. Much like the cover art, interior art is realistic, but childlike. Readers can tell what animals are supposed to look like, but the feel is playful. The overall effect of the book is an exuberant call to praise and thank the Lord for His work!
Bottom Line: God’s Little Oceanographer would make a great addition to a primary school study of oceans. And those who have young children at home who love all things ocean might want to snag a copy for their home libraries.
