George Washington’s Breakfast by Jean Fritz

George Washington’s Breakfast by Jean Fritz, illustrated by Paul Galdone (cover image by Tomie DePaola). Putnam & Grosset, 1969. 48 pages.

Reading Level: Picture Books, ages 8-10
Recommended for: ages 4-10

gwbGeorge Washington Allen’s curiosity leads to research when he ponders what his namesake ate for breakfast. Before the days of Google, research was conducted in libraries, through interviews, and on location. With the help of his local librarian, parents, and feisty, reluctant grandmother, he explores various avenues and learns more about his hero in a way that is engaging for the reader.

Jean Fritz is known for her other brief biographical sketches and demonstrates how raising good questions and not giving up can be both rewarding and delicious. Paul Galdone’s illustrations provide an excellent blend between history and contemporary settings. With a little mystery, a little history, a little wonder, and the help of caring adults in a child’s life, this book sets a good example of how we can search for truth, weigh the facts, and finally “taste and see.”
